Richard Potter, a well-known heather grower lived in Minster Lovell from about 1900 until his death in 1922. Does anyone know if he actually grew heathers on his property while he lived here? Minster Lovell doesn’t have the best growing conditions for heathers, but we would like to solve a mystery.

The Vipond surname

One of the war dead for Minster Lovell is Harold Vipond Butler (baptised 1900 in Minster Lovell, died 1918 Ipswich, buried in Minster Lovell). I often wondered about his middle name. His family come from Oxfordshire for many generations. Recently I was tracking another village family and traced the family back to a Lucy Vipond who was baptised 1823 in Hardwick, Norfolk and lived in Depwade, Norfolk all her life. Her son George Vipond Byles trained as a Wesleyan Minister and was based in Witney for a time. His son Donald was born there in 1902. There must be some connection between Harold Butler and these other Viponds. Does anyone know?

We are working frantically on the family tree and now have nearly 10,000 people who lived in Minster Lovell or were in some one connected to them. Do please send in any more information you might have as we want to get it all finished by late spring 2012 to publish it online. Family stories are especially welcome.

Migration to/from Minster Lovell

We are still gathering information on people who have come to live in the village, even for a short time, and those who have left to go somewhere else, so do contact us if you have any data. We’ve had two extra families added to our database this month from the website. Next year we hope to publish our full family tree for everyone to see. We’ve just got about 50 more surnames to complete then all the error correction to do!

Charterville in Minster Lovell and War Dead

We are hard at work on a map showing the whole of Minster Lovell (Old Minster, Little Minster and Charterville) with names of who lived in which house from the 1400s to 1950. Do send us any information you have. We are particularly trying to trace each owner of the original Charterville plots through the sale of them after the Chartist Land Company failed and up to the families in the 1950s. Although we have many names, the challenge is matching the names to specific plots. We want to have a big display in June 2012 for the village Jubilee celebrations.

The parish council has carved two extra names on the War Memorial for Minster men who were missed off originally and they will be honoured this weekend. There is one more – unfortunately too many people were named Lock in the village because there were two men called ‘H. Lock’ which is what is carved on the memorial. We have records of Horace Lock died 30/12/1917 and Herbert Lock died 01/11/1918, so we just need to discuss what to do with their inscriptions. We are so grateful that these extra names are being added.

Lower Crescent in Minster Lovell – was it once a crescent?

We have been looking at old maps so we can build our map of who lived where in the village. Both Upper Crescent and Lower Crescent come off the Burford Road. But Lower Crescent isn’t a crescent at all but a cul-de-sac road. Was it a crescent originally – maybe going through to Little Minster or looping back into the Burford Road? If not, why did it gets that name? All help appreciated.

War memorial

We have heard that the Parish Council are arranging for 3 more minster Lovell names to be carved on the war memorial. Thanks especially to Peter Gough for his persistence in tracing the war dead. Ernest Greenaway still eludes us but we will find him – maybe in Canada having survived WWI?

Who lived where in Minster Lovell?

Thank you to everyone who came to our stand at the Methodist anniversary fete on Saturday, especially those who bought copies of the book/DVD/film to help us pay for printing etc. on our projects. We also got some extra information on who lived in certain houses in the village – especially some of the Charterville bungalows. We have good data for when they were first built in 1845 and for the 1950s but need to fill in the gaps, so if you know of a family at a specific address then please contact us.
